At the risk of throwing myself under the bus, I am going to share a story with you.
It’s true. I did. I healed my shingles with potatoes and pears! Let me tell you what happened!
A little while ago, I started to get this burning pain in my mid back, between my shoulder blade and my spine on the left side. It was a familiar pain that I have experienced several times before. For me, this pain would always come on during times of stress, and the main trigger was always the same emotion – not feeling good enough.
A week passed, the pain was getting worse, and then started to wrap around my rib cage into the front. A few more days went by, and now I could feel my pancreas was extremely inflamed. I couldn’t take a deep breath in, sleep on my back or my left side.
The pain in my back had turned into a severe case of pancreatitis. A few more days passed, pain was still getting worse and then one night all I could do was just lay on the couch and try to breath. Meanwhile, let me tell you, I was taking every supplement and homeopathic under the sun that I could possibly think of to try to heal this. Nothing was touching it! I hadn’t slept in about a week because every night, I would wake up at exactly 2 a.m. with excruciating pain.
So while not sleeping, what does one do? I research.
Ok, now side note – Have you heard of the Medical Medium by Anthony William? His information had been smacking me in the face for at least a week prior, everywhere I looked, that’s all I saw. And every time his name came across my news-feed I could hear that little voice of intuition say, “Are you paying attention?” And naturally, as I do, I say, “yeah, yeah, I’ll get to it”, and then I bat it away like an annoying fruit fly.
I had previously read his first book at least a year ago, and although I found it very interesting, I was reading it from a place of resistance so a lot of the information didn’t quite “click” for me in that moment. The thing was, I agreed with so much of what he was saying but then there was also a lot of information that really contradicted what I believed…so I mean, obviously what I knew and believed had to be right…right?! Mmmm… yeah, so turns out, in fact, I DO NOT know everything. I know! I was shocked too!
So, during my research that night of how to heal pancreatitis, again, I came across his website. He suggested that pears are one of the most healing foods for the pancreas. Not only this, but he also goes on to talk about the emotional and spiritual lesson of the pear. Now, if I had any doubt… this just sealed the deal for me. The emotional and spiritual lesson was the EXACT situation that set this off for me in the first place:
An overburdened, over-stressed, and overheated pancreas and liver are often behind someone’s unsettled emotions such as frustration, irritation, uneasiness, or lack of peace. Pears are the ideal food to remedy this situation, because they are the ultimate cooling tonic, especially for the liver and pancreas.

The next morning, I decided I was going to follow his advice. I mean, why not, I had already done EVERYTHING else! Now, I just have to also say, part of my resistance was due to the fact that he has really gotten out there and A LOT of people are on this bandwagon. I am NOT a bandwagon jumper. I refuse. However, I also said that about the Instant Pot and now I couldn’t ever imagine my life without it!
OK – so for that whole day I pretty much just ate pears and other fresh fruit, and then for dinner I made his vegan healing broth, but instead of straining it, I ate the vegetables because I wasn’t going to waste them! I also stopped taking all of my nutritional supplements, and decided I was just going to try it with food instead. You guys!!! That night I SLEPT through the WHOLE night WITHOUT ANY PAIN!!!
When I woke up in the morning, I noticed what appeared to be 3 spider bites on my back exactly where the pain had originated. Obviously, I blamed my husband for this because there was a spider in the bathroom the night before and he just left it there! Anyway, as the day went on, I noticed they were REALLY itchy.
I continued to eat the same way that day, and again, slept through the night, but the next morning I noticed that my “spider bites” had turned into a giant rash… well actually a cluster of shingles! Painful, pins and needles, burning, itching, shingles! Nothing like feeling as if you’re being tattooed all day long. Not to mention ladies, this was right along my bra line! UGH! Couldn’t wait to get that bad boy off at the end of the day!
The virus had been lying dormant in my pancreas!!! This explains my crazy pancreatic issues and blood sugar imbalances that I’ve been dealing with for so long!
Continuing with the diet for several more days and looking into advice from the Medical Medium, in his book, Life Changing Foods, he suggested that white potatoes are great for shingles because of the lysine content. Can you believe it? WHITE potatoes… Nightshades… are supposed to be good for my shingles? Do you have any idea how long it had been since I ate a WHITE potato?! So guess what I ate for dinner that night? Yep, potatoes. And they were delicious! And hey, guess what? That night after dinner, I noticed I wasn’t as itchy! I ate them again the next day, and I was even LESS itchy. Within a few days my itching was almost non-existent and within almost a week the swelling and blisters were nearly gone.
I have continued to eat how he recommends for a healthy diet (I do still eat animal protein but not every day), and I can’t believe the changes that have taken place. For example, I’ve had a small raised purple scar on my leg for years. Every time I tested it, it would show for metals or chemicals, but it would never go away. Within two days of starting this new diet, the scar opened up and started to scab over and has almost completely healed.
I’ve often felt hopeless between food sensitivities, oxalate issues, and a double MTHFR gene mutation. Sometimes I felt like no matter what I did, it would never be good enough.
Prior to this happening, my husband and I were talking about how I just felt like something wasn’t right. How can this be, that I have been in this life of holistic healing for 14 years, and eating completely organic for the last 10 years and yet I felt so terrible! I mean, don’t get me wrong, generally I am “healthy”, but I knew in my heart I should feel so much better than I did. And I also didn’t believe that we should be allergic to so many healthy foods. Foods that were put on this earth to sustain us. It just didn’t make sense to me. I have been questioning this for quit a while now, and Anthony William answered so many of those questions for me – including my questions about healing MTHFR – Yes, that’s right HEALING it!
Personally, what it came down to was to open my mind to the possibility that even still what I thought was healthy, may not be ideal. And really, it was the fact that I needed to switch the emphasis from fat and protein to WAY more fruit and vegetables. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t necessarily about being vegetarian or vegan, it’s just that we can get caught up in what we THINK we need, versus what our body ACTUALLY needs.
Just read his books, that’s all I can say. And read it with an open mind! Don’t be like me and wait until you have some health crisis to change your views!
