Spiritual Alchemy: The 7 Stages of Transformation

Alchemy: To transform. A power or process of changing one thing into another; especially, a seemingly miraculous power or process of changing one thing into something better.

Spiritual Alchemy: Personal transformation and inner liberation through; destruction, purification, integration, acceptance, alignment and rebuilding.

The term “spiritual alchemy” isn’t just a fun, new age word. The idea of spiritual alchemy can actually be traced back to Aristotle who understood that there is a force that holds all other forms in existence together, but is itself invisible – which these days, we call God/Creator/Source/Spirit, etc.

This invisible force is a field of pure potential that can only come into existence when it is embodied within a form – The physical.

This is also the basis of Metaphysics: There is this infinite energy that we have all originated from – the Materia Prima (original material) that we are all a part of, which is our God-Self, Higher-Self, etc. This infinite energy is the all knowing, all seeing, and in the purest form – it is the original material that creates any kind of physical matter.

To radically simplify, the idea is that there is only one consciousness that exists, and each person is only a part of that one consciousness.

“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only transformed”

This quote isn’t just a nice inspirational phrase. This is a true scientific fact. So, if that is true, it is also true that we are not separate from the one original energy source.

Spiritual Alchemy is about burning down old stories, limiting beliefs, conditioned behaviors, releasing core wounds and self-destructive traits that are not authentic to you on a soul level or in alignment with your highest potential.

The Spiritual Alchemy process changes the way one views reality. Often the transformation process comes about because a person has reached a point in their life where the only option is to burn it all down in order to move forward.

This is the first  law of nature: The Law of Self-Preservation. When one is forced to come face to face with oneself, and their pain. They no longer have a choice to deny it.

So, what does the unraveling and rebuilding process look like? Let’s talk about it…

The 7 Stages of Spiritual Alchemy

1. Calcination: (The Awareness Phase)

Breaking down the illusions: How are you contributing to your own suffering?

This is where you start looking at the parts of yourself that are getting in the way of your own happiness (i.e. ego, self-doubt, stubbornness, self-sabotaging behavior, pride, arrogance). You begin to identify triggers, core wounds, and trauma. You start looking at yourself with curiosity to better understand where it all came from and how it has sculpted your personality, behaviors and reality.

2. Dissolution: (The Awakening Process)

You will begin to learn how to step outside of false identities (conditioning, triggers, ego, etc.) to observe both positive and negative aspects of yourself. This is all about taking responsibility for your behavior, and understanding how you affect other people and everything else in your reality (taking responsibility for your thoughts, actions, behaviors, patterns, etc.).

Sometimes this comes about through a trauma such as an illness, injury, or other life altering situation that shocks you awake out of distractions.

3. Separation: (Where the real Shadow Work begins)

This is the process of truly becoming aware of your authentic feelings for a person, yourself or a situation.

Instead of suppressing your emotions, you actually allow yourself to fully experience them. You may feel anger, frustration, disappointment… whatever the uncomfortable emotion is, you give yourself permission to feel it!

In the past you would have reverted back to old habits and coping mechanisms just because it was easier and more comfortable than actually sitting with your feelings and trying to understand them… but not anymore!

*Steps 1-3 are all about purification and clarification – You are just beginning to become aware of what, how and why.

4. Conjunction: (Acceptance Phase)

During this phase, many of your unconscious thoughts and feelings will surface to be incorporated into your conscious mind.

During this time, you will have many *opportunities* (as I like to call them) to take a deeper look and consciously choose differently. This can be a very challenging and triggering time. This is where journaling, meditation, and lots of alone time are needed to really help process and gain clarity as to what and how you truly feel.

*Steps 1-4 are about working through aspects of your old personality.

5. Fermentation: (Conception)

This is the beginning of your rebirth process where you will experience the breakdown to create space for the breakthrough.

Fermentation is a two step process: Putrefaction and Spiritization.

Putrefaction is the decomposition (breakdown) of your former self. This is when people and/or situations that are no longer in alignment with your higher purpose will be cleared from your path.

Some refer to this stage as the dark night of the soul, which can be a very challenging and confusing time. Most people going through this stage will experience quite a bit of uncertainty, depression and darkness. This time can look like chaos and destruction, but here’s the thing – if you are choosing to walk the spiritual path, you don’t get to be a spiritual person only when it’s convenient for you, or when things are easy and going “well”.

Remember: You are rebuilding yourself. You can’t remodel a house without ripping it down first.

The second stage is Spiritization which is where you begin to look at the world through a new lens – you have gained a new perspective of reality. Through your inner guidance and healing, you learn to surrender to the process, and release all that is not in alignment with your transformation.

This is when you truly begin to experience those moments of inner peace.

6. Distillation: (Gestation)

Now that you have begun to accept, surrender, and experience, it is time to integrate your new aspects in order for it to become a permanent part of your being. This distillation process is yet another level of purification.

Consider this phase an opportunity to “practice what you preach”. You’ve been doing the work, but are you truly embodying it? This is about becoming even more conscious of your every-day life choices.

Is everything you do, say, think, and consume in alignment with your transformation process?

This is the true definition of Self-Realization, which means that you are embodying and living from your authentic or Higher-Self – not your ego.

Daily practice of mindfulness, meditation, yoga and consciousness are extremely important during this phase (and when I say consciousness, I mean being hyper aware of every single thing you are doing, saying, and consuming).

7. Coagulation: (Rebirth)

Congratulations! You have become ONE with the Universal Consciousness and are liberated from your mind! You have finally done it… No more work for you – you are now enlightened!

HA! JUST KIDDING! As long as you are in human form, you will continue to evolve and grow. You will have moments of brilliant clarity, and moments of feeling like you know nothing… Just go with it – surrender to the process, and start back at phase one if needed.

But here’s the truth – you have always been one with the Universal Consciousness, and as you go through the 7 Stages of Transformation, you will fully awaken and remember your connection to your God-Self.

  • You will understand that YOU ARE an aspect of Spirit in physical form.
  • You will understand that YOU ARE a co-creator of your reality.
  • You will learn to live in alignment with your True-Self rather than ego (the ego mind is the analytical mind, not your God-Self. The Ego fills you with self-doubt and fear. Your True-Self guides you through intuition and provides you with a sense of safety and knowing).
  • You will know and feel that no matter what, it’s all good, all the time.

Questions to remind yourself throughout your transformation process:

These questions are a YES or NO, not a maybe.

  1. How much do you really want to change yourself? How motivated are you? Do you just want to complain but not really willing to do anything about it?
  2. Are you willing to actually attempt it? How much effort are you willing to make? Transformation takes action!
  3. Are you willing to persevere once you start the process? It can be scary, and even painful at times. Are you going to quit halfway through and decide it’s too hard? Let me gently remind you, if you stop midway, it can feel like you’re broken. It will feel chaotic. You have to complete the transformation in order to be rebuilt and feel whole.
  4. Are you going to embrace the process or kick and scream the whole time? Resistance will only make it harder than it needs to be, where as if you completely surrender, you will get through the process quicker. If you feel like it’s “too deep and too hard”, this way of thinking keeps you stuck in the energy. You have to be willing to release in order to lighten your load.
  5. Do you have the faith that you can actually transform? Do you truly trust and believe in yourself and your higher power that all is working for you, to align you with your soul’s purpose?

If you cannot honestly answer with a wholehearted “YES” to these questions, you might want to consider getting on board *quickly*, because the Universe doesn’t care if you think you’re ready or not – it waits for no one! (Psst – I know a girl that can help you!)

If you’re worried that you may “fail”, let me share something with you – The only reason people may “fail” in their transformation process is if they think there is an option to bypass something. This comes from a place of fear – they are looking for an easy way out. There is no easy way out. Bypassing only drives it deeper into your being, but when you acknowledge it head on, it speeds up the process and saves you a whole lot of potential pain.

Journal Prompt

What is one of the most emotionally painful things you’ve ever been through, and how did it change you for the better?

Divine Spirit within me, who is at the center of the Universe,

I call forth into your presence, the soul in which I am, to be guided by your eternal consciousness.

As I seek to transform my inner life, I know that you work through me to support and guide my transformation so that I may align with my highest potential for this lifetime.

As I seek to make the necessary changes within myself,  I feel your Divine love within me. I know that as these required changes arise, I am held in love, as I know it is for my highest and greatest good.

As I pray for support and guidance, my prayers are directed inward, within myself, because I am an aspect of the Divine Spirit in physical form, eternally connected to the Primal Source of creation.

I acknowledge and declare that the infinite power of the Divine Creative Presence within me, is working through me, to support my transformation process, so that I may fully align with my soul’s purpose and  potential.

For all of this, and something even better, I give thanks.

And so it is.
